Story #59 - Postpartum Pandemic Stories - Wise Words from Martha Fischer, LMFT

During the COVID-19 quarantine, I will be sharing #wisewords from professionals to help navigate this pandemic in general, and your quarantined (postpartum) life in particular.

Martha is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She shares some guidance about having to share space with your partner and family during this pandemic :

  • Negotiate the space in your home as it doubles as work and play.

  • Negotiate childcare when you're both present so that you each feel respected and heard and present for your kids.

  • Get outside as much as you can - social distancing in nature is pretty freeing. As long as you keep your 6 feet apart, you can feel less confined, looking up to the sky and feeling the air through the trees.

  • Understand that anxiety hovers externally and within each of us, and that manifests itself in very different ways. Some become quiet, and others reach for connection for reassurance.

  • Best advice, lead from your heart as much as possible. And reach for repair when the heart isn't available. Our emotional bandwidth narrows as our collective anxiety of today and the future increases. So be kind to yourselves and each other.
